How can I tell if my stone has already been sealed?
Apply a drop of water at least ½-inch in diameter to the top and the stone and let stand for at least 15 minutes. Cover with a glass to inhibit evaporation. If the stone did not darken then your stone is probably sealed against water-based stains. Testing for oil repellency is not as simple because if your stone is not sealed, you will have an oil stain.
How do I know what type of floor I'm cleaning?
Do your four tests and see what type of results you get. First look at the grout lines, often times with natural stone the grout lines are 1/8 inch wide, and man-made floors are ¼ inch wide. Look at the tile pattern, do the tiles re-peat themselves, or does each tile look different. If tiles re-peat themselves they are man-made. Do a scratch test, natural stone will scratch quite easily, man-made surfaces are very hard and scratch resistant. Finally if still wondering, do an acid test, if the tile itself re-acts with a fizz it is natural stone. Keep in mind Slate, Saltillo or Terra Cota will not off-gas. (fizz)
